Casio has announced that it will release its latest entry-level digital piano – the Casio PX160. This is to replace the previous model, the PX150. This new model has more features but retains everything that made the PX150 so popular. There will be many new features that are only found on higher-end digital pianos.
This is a full-size portable keyboard and weighs only 25 pounds, making it one of the lightest, and most portable digital pianos on the market. Compared to the previous model, the PX160 has redesigned and improved speakers which point to the audience. It also has Casio’s sophisticated AiR technology which produces crystal clear sounds even at a high volume. There is a USB connection which can also be used for MIDI communication. External speakers can be connected via the line out connection.

Casio has done a fantastic job of installing a high-end keyboard in their level-entry digital piano. Even with the previous PX150 model the keys weren’t quite up to ‘grand piano’ standards. This is obtained with Casio’s Tri-Sensor Scaled Hammer Action II Keyboard. As the name suggests, the action is very close to the hammer action on an acoustic piano. Sound quality of the PX160
Casio uses its AiR (Acoustic and Intelligent Resonator) technology in its top of the range models as well as in models in its lower price range instruments. The pX160 also has this technology. What does that mean?
AiR technology is a multi-dimensional sound production system. It delivers amazing sound quality, even that of a large concert grand piano! The technology allows sound combinations to be obtained which would be difficult to get in small rooms. The piano voices are of a very high quality and it is difficult to tell the difference between the sounds from the PX160 and those from a grand piano.
What you have to remember is that the sound quality is absolutely amazing considering this is technically a ‘budget’ digital piano.
What adds to the sound quality are the redesigned speakers on the back (audience side) of the instrument. There are 2 8-watt speakers directed to the audience. This means that it is a great instrument for playing concerts. There is also a speaker opening to the front of the piano, so if the piano sits against a wall, you still hear great sound.
Connectivity
The Casio PX160 has a USB port installed for easy connection to a computer or a MIDI device. This allows for recording of music, which would be quite limited as only 1 song can be stored on the piano.
There is a 2 track recorder which can be used to record melodies with some accompaniment.
One great improvement with the PX160 over the previous PX150 is the line out connections. This was something lacking in the PX150. This new model as a left and right channel connection on the back of the unit, allowing the piano to be connected to external speakers. Another improvement with the connectivity is the placement of the headphone sockets. There are now 2 headphone sockets on the front of the unit. That makes it much easier to access when needed.

It is possible to use a Duet Mode on the PX160. With this, the keyboard can be split into 2 smaller ones, but with both having the same timbre and range. This lets 2 people to play at the same time. This can be a fantastic tool for piano teachers.
The keyboard also has a split mode. This spilts the keyboard into two different zones. So you could play bass with your left hand and play piano with your right.
