A very important feature of a portable digital piano is making sure that playing the keyboard resembles playing an acoustic piano. In this respect, Yamaha has done an amazing job on their keyboards. The P115 has Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard keyboard. This mimics how real piano keys work.
In the price range that the P115 is in, it can be sometimes difficult to get key actions that are close to a real acoustic piano. In the previous Yamaha portable models, these seemed to be a bit ‘plastic’ sounding. However, this has been improved with the P115
The Graded hammer technology means that there is greater resistance on the keys towards the bottom and less resistance on the keys near the top.
The playing experience is also enhanced by the 4 touch sensitive levels. These can be set to soft, medium, hard, or turned off altogether.
Sound quality
The sound quality of the Yamaha P115 has been greatly improved. Yamaha has increased the polyphony from 128-note in the previous model to 192-note polyphony in the P115. This is an important factor in sound quality. The higher the polyphony, the closer the digital piano will sound to the real thing.
Another nice feature on the P115 is a Sound Boost option. This works to boost the volume if you need to play the piano loudly. Very often with digital pianos of this price range, the sound can become distorted when the volume is turned up. The clear, crisp sounds are no doubt helped by the 2 high-quality built-in speakers. So, if you want to play alongside other instruments or play outside, this is a great choice.
Playing the Yamaha P115
Yamaha have now included more instrument sounds in the P115. This has increased from 14 to 17 and there are also 10 pianist styles to choose from. This gives much more flexibility when playing the piano.
One really nice feature of this digital piano is its ‘virtual duet partner.’ You can choose a style to play and the piano will accompany you by playing the chords in the chosen style. This can allow you more freedom and creativity to create better melodies.
The piano comes with a sustain pedal and if you require a 3-pedal unit, then this can be purchased separately.
One drawback for some will be the lack of a display screen. However, not all musicians require this and especially for professional musicians, this isn’t necessary anyway.

Connectivity
The P115 comes with a USB port which allows connection to computers or iPads. For the later, a musician can download the “Digital Piano Controller” for iPads and iPhones. This makes it easier to control the keyboard from your device.
One downside where connections are concerned is the lack of a MIDI port. To get around this, some users connect a MIDI USB device which allows the keyboard to be connected to a computer with MIDI functionality.
However, there is a connection function that the P115 has which other digital pianos in the price range don’t – an audio line-out jack. This will allow you to easily connect the piano to external speakers.
Portability
There are some digital pianos on the market which are called portable, but in all practicality, they are just too heavy to lift. However, the Yamaha P115 can be called truly portable. It weighs only 26 pounds, making it fairly easy to lift and transport.
